Hi! Nice to meet you.
I’m Ben Derico— a journalist and documentary filmmaker creating engaging visual storytelling from my home in San Francisco and around the world. I’ve worked as a staff Video Journalist & Producer with BBC News as well as produced for The Intercept, CNN, The Washington Post, and Público, Portugal’s largest newspaper, as well. When not filming my own stories, I work with other content creators, journalists, and non-fiction filmmakers to create stunning visuals and captivating stories.
For a decade I worked as a commercial video producer, editor, and director. I crated edits on big budget ads, filmed beautiful frames for branded content projects, and produced engaging online content for social media. Since 2020, I’ve focused on non-fiction storytelling and documentary film production - completing my master’s at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. My thesis documentary Hasta la última gota, following the fight for water and a new constitution in Chile, was published in The Intercept. The film had its US premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival. It premiered two months later internationally at the Banff Mountain Film & Book Festival in Alberta, Canada.
My work includes news segments & explainers, short documentaries, and branded content.
I work in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
