Hi! Nice to meet you.
I'm Ben Derico — a cinematographer and video journalist based in San Francisco.
I worked as staff Video Journalist at BBC NewsSan Francisco, shooting and producing hundreds of pieces for the BBC, including flagship shows Tech Now (formerly Click), and BBC Newsnight. Selected work includes a live interview with Elon Musk, an investigation into Google's earthquake warning system, and a Newsnight documentary on facial recognition and US law enforcement. I'm LiveU trained for live broadcasting and HEFAT certified.
My science and climate journalism has been published by The World from PRX, The Intercept, The Guardian, and my films have been published in CNN and The Washington Post. I work in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Before BBC, I spent a decade as a commercial producer and director through Sidekick Video, working with agencies including Leo Burnett & IDEO and brands including Apple and Google.
I hold a master's in journalism from UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. My thesis documentary Hasta la última gota — on Chile's fight for water rights — premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival and the Banff Mountain Film Festival.
